Querido coleccionista: Roaring Twenties, Speakeasy bars in 1920 and 2020
Our favorite drink is Negroni, but cocktails are a whole intriguing world

If asked what would be the only cocktail you’d save in an apocalypse, both
and I have no doubt: NEGRONI.This atemporal poli-drink, as the Futurists would have called it, is quintessential and perfect. It needs a very good Vermouth, preferably Italian, for it is generally bitter and more aromatic than French and Spanish versions.
I prefer my gin to be as pure and unflavored as possible, but sometimes I like to experiment.
Of course, you need very little equipment to make it at home and make it delicious.
This is why this month, I am asking
Habláme de tu ingrediente para cocktail sin el cual, el bar no es un bar.
Tell me about your cocktail ingredient without which, the bar is not a bar.
In a complete turn of events, gin is the necessary cocktail ingredient that is a staple and an unmissable piece of any creation. I mainly indulge in Gin-based cocktails such as Negroni and Martini.
But this is just the building block of having a bar at home.
I would like to signal the excellent readings by
AKA “highball” - he recently published the perfect guide to start building a meaningful bar at home. His tips and tricks and his cocktail recipes will let you master the basics and go a bit beyond.
In some European cities (London, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, and Milan), you have a lot going on regarding the cocktail scene.
This month
asked me on point:Dónde te has tomado el mejor negroni (el cocktail favorito de las dos :) ) de tu vida?
Where have you had the best negroni (both of your favourite cocktails :) ) of your life?
Home is the best place where I can think of having my Negroni: the sheer amount of bitters and vermouth combinations that we can experiment with, combined with organic Oranges from the Algarve or bitter ones when we feel funny, and almost perfect clear ice for me is not easy to overcome.
Whenever I am in one of those cities, I cannot avoid visiting at least one of the best cocktail bars in town.
Nevertheless, I felt pretty at home regarding Negroni at Claridge`s and the Conneghaut in London. Torn between the two, I would choose the first because I can slide out and have a Sunday Roast afterwards.
Probably nowhere in the world are cocktails made like in London: in Paris, we were extremely wasted with an overpowered one at La Meurice, and in Venice, you are drawn to immerse in the atmosphere of Cipriani more than the classic cocktails, and probably have a (perfect) Bellini while shooting water at birds.
A close runner-up for me is Savas Bar in Madrid.
It is impossible not to love the owners and their cocktails—especially all the classics and the ones that are becoming classics in their hands.
Close by is the local speakeasy in Lisbon, Red Frog.
Equally interesting is the classic Negroni at LiquidLove and Quattro Teste, also in Lisbon, and specialised in Vermouth.
Far away, in the mountaineering oasis, is the Province of Bozen in Italy; I recently found solace and bitter drinks at Black Sheep - the perfect aprés ski. Far away from the crowd of the slopes and close by are the best mountaineering gear shops for late afternoon shopping.
I had their Wonder Woman and did not regret it.
And what is your cocktail of choice this season?
Tenemos pendiente un Negroni al sol en una terraza de la Piazza Navona de Roma… ;)
